Denture Wearers

If you wear a complete denture, you will have unique needs. Many people think that dentists don’t treat patients with complete dentures. This is not the case at Warmland Dental. Yes, we do make dentures, but more importantly, we provide treatments to stabilize them. No matter how well a denture is made, if there is no ridge to hold the denture it will be uncomfortable and look un-natural.

Dental implants are small titanium screws that are placed into the jaw bone. Over 30 years of research has shown that the bone grows onto the implant surface, a process called osseointegration. The denture is then attached to the implants to prevent movement.

Dental implants can stabilize or possibly replace your dentures entirely. There are many options available. Outlined below are the main categories.

Two Implant Retained Lower Denture:

This is the most economical way to stabilize a lower denture is with two implants in the front of the jaw. This stops the denture from moving side to side or falling out of the mouth. But, the denture will still rock slightly with the back lifting of the gums. It greatly increases function and comfort but does not completely immobilize the denture.

Four Implant Supported Lower Denture:

With more implants comes greater stability. Four implants are connected to each other with a metal bar. The denture then rests on top of the bar which virtually immobilizes it. Function, stability and comfort are made vastly better.

Implant Supported Upper Denture:

The bone in the upper jaw is different from the lower jaw. It is much weaker. This means that more implants are required to support the denture. Depending upon the patient, an upper denture can be supported with as little a four implants but often six or more are required. These implants are connected by a bar which the denture sits on.

Healing Times:

When four or more implants are placed, the time between implant placement and denture attachment can be greatly decreased. The supporting bar is placed often within a matter of days. This way the denture can rest on the bar and not the gum tissue. Discomfort during the healing period is much less by this method.

Fixed compared to Removable Options:

If there is only a small degree of bone loss present, a fixed bridge can be placed on the implants. This means that the teeth are not removed at night or for cleaning. Some patients find this the most attractive option as it replaces their denture. However, it is not the option of choice for patients who have experienced moderate to high levels of bone loss.
