Should I have my silver fillings taken out?

This is a serious question. The question I would ask back is, “Why you would want them removed?” Is it because you don’t like the look of them? Or, is it because you think they are a health risk. Either way, the choice is ultimately yours. If you don’t like the look of them, that’s a cosmetic issue. As far as the health risks, I do not believe that silver fillings cause any health effects except in the extremely rare case of an allergy. I don’t feel people should be scared into having their silver fillings replaced because of health concerns. Also, I would also encourage patients to examine the motives of dentists who advocate the all out removal of silver fillings and state that it may cure an unrelated illness. Regardless, if you do elect to have them replaced, ask your dentist about the types of filling materials that are available so the best choices are made.

Do you do white fillings?

White fillings are done by probably all dentists practicing today. I use them on a regular basis in front teeth and small fillings in back teeth. However, I do not think they are a good choice for big fillings in back teeth. They just are not strong enough and wear too fast. When it comes to the molars, there are other materials, like porcelain and gold, which will give you many more years of service and need to be replaced much less often. It’s a matter of quality.

Do you do veneers?

Cosmetic procedures to fix unsightly teeth have been made widely popular since shows like ‘Extreme Makeover’ have been on TV. I think that porcelain veneers are an excellent choice for many patients and look very natural, if done right. A person’s entire look can be changed with improvements of the smile. I often like to do digital imaging to predict the outcome first so people have a clear idea of what to expect when we are finished.

Can you help me with my loose dentures?

Many people think that they have to live with loose dentures. They hate that they fall out during a meal or when speaking and constantly put up with sore spots that only get worse with time. If only everyone knew that this was not a fact of life anymore. Dental implants can stabilize or replace dentures completely. Everyday I encourage people to consider implants because everyday their situation gets worse. It’s not too late to explore you options to regain confidence and comfort.

I want implants to help me with my denture but I can’t afford it?

Compared to the old standard denture an implant solution is expensive. But, the results are worlds apart. A dental implant solution to stabilize or replace a denture is designed to last for many, many years and provide a level of function that is far beyond what can be expected with standard dentures. Every year that a person waits is another year of further bone loss. This leads to changes in the look of the face, pain when eating and instability in social situations. And, bone loss also narrows options for treatments. The question should be, “Can you afford not to consider implants?”

When and how do I pay for my dentistry?

It’s no secret. Dentistry is not cheap. How can it be with the high level of technology, specialized materials and continual training required to deliver the best possible care to patients? If you are lucky enough to be covered by a dental plan many of our basic and even complex procedures may be covered.

We will process your dental claim and, at this time, accept payment from your insurance carrier. Any amount that is not covered by your dental plan is expected on the day of treatment. In order to protect against financial surprises we often will submit a ‘pre-authorization’ to your dental insurance carrier so we can deliver an accurate estimate.

Sometimes, the best treatment is not the one covered by your insurance. At Warmland Dental, we will provide you with a range of options but our advice is based on what is best for you, not your insurance company. We hope that patients make decisions based on solid reasons like quality and longevity, not just on insurance coverage.

There are other methods of financing dental care. Ask our receptionist, Darlene to give you the details.
